YouTues: the electric BMW 3-Series that humbles supercars

Custom Beemer is faster than Porsche 911 and BMW M6. Much.

Whether a traffic light grand prix takes place or not is usually decided with one quick glance. As in, “I’m in a Mazda RX-8, he’s in a 911 Carrera S.... it's not going to happen”.

Well, the chap in the Mazda might take one look at the subject of this week’s YouTues feature, an ageing BMW 3-Series with lurid paint and some dodgy decals, and think to himself ‘game on!’ And, oh my, what a surprise our friend would get as the BMW disappears in a blue-grey cloud of tyre smoke.

Our sub-titled video is 6 minutes 49 seconds long and it chronicles how this properly insane Beemer came into being. A project led by Mate Rimac in Croatia, the 3-Series is amazingly well developed – it’s not just a garden shed project with baling-wire solutions. When the team found that off-the-shelf components weren’t doing the job, they came up with their own designs using 3D programmes.

The result is a ‘sleeper’ that puts out the equivalent of 650hp and deploys a massive 900Nm of torque. And with a stripped out interior, it’s not very heavy, either, weighing 1,050kg. The performance, as you can imagine, is immense: 0-60mph in a Tesla-beating 3.5secs and a top speed of 174mph.

And if you’re not that into the development story, we’ve isolated some of the oh-my-god moments. So if you go along to 2:05, you can watch our hero take on a BMW M6 drag-style (including the obligatory ‘tyre warming’ scene). There’s another classic drag moment at 2:50, where we see what is either the bravest cameraman in the world, or the most forehead-smackingly stupid. At 3:55, there’s a genius ‘drift’ sequence and the final moment, at 6:35, where a Porsche Carrera 911 4S driver is left wondering whether what he really needs is a 20-year old BMW 3-Series. And a plug.

And those of you who like a bit of Dubstep*, take a look at this music edit:

** Oh, never mind!
