Star highlights shared vision of sustainability

American electric car maker Fisker, creator of the Karma luxury sports GT, has announced that it has signed a deal with movie superstar Leonardo DiCaprio to help promote global sustainability.
Star of blockbusters Titanic and Inception, DiCaprio is a committed environmental philanthropist. He established the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998, which backs initiatives in areas such as wildlife protection, forest preservation, access to clean water, disaster relief and climate change.
Fisker, meanwhile, uses sustainable materials and production processes for the Karma, the first-ever example of which was delivered to DiCaprio in July last year.
“My foundation supports efforts to secure a sustainable future for our planet and all its inhabitants,” said DiCaprio. “I am delighted to be working with Fisker Automotive to promote this shared vision.”
The 37-year-old Hollywood A-lister has become an equity investor in Fisker, and as such will participate in conversations on the auto manufacturer’s future plans for the advancement of sustainable, responsible vehicles. He will also get involved in the marketing and promotional initiatives aimed at bringing attention to sustainability and environmental awareness. Fisker, in turn, will support the charitable work of the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation around the globe.
The Karma is an electric car with two electric motors driving the rear wheels, while a 2.0-litre ‘range extender’ petrol engine fires up when the battery gets low, maintaining charge levels for a total driving distance of around 300 miles between stops.
It’s capable of 0-60mph in 6.3 seconds and a top speed of 125 mph, but the drivetrain technology allows fuel economy of 100mpg and CO2 emissions of just 53g/km, according to transport testing specialists TÜV. The interior incorporates reclaimed and recycled interior wood trim from either California wildfires or Lake Michigan driftwood.
